Parenting Through Trauma
How do I keep it together when I feel like I’m falling apart?
You’ve already done the work. You’ve dug into your past in therapy, and you know how to pinpoint the disconnection and avoidance that arise when painful past experiences are influencing your present-day life. You thought you had a grip on this, so why is it showing up again?
All of a sudden, you’re stuck in throwback anxiety spirals that keep you up at night. You know that talking to that one friend helps you feel better, but you’re frozen, and the thought of reaching out to someone feels overwhelming.
This isn’t what you imagined. You envisioned the kind of mother you were going to be, and lashing out at your partner or becoming completely dysregulated when your baby cries wasn’t part of the plan. My clients want to feel capable in their role as mothers, not yanked around by something that happened to a younger version of themselves. You want to show up as the best version of you.
The truth is, motherhood is a magnifying glass. You’ve put in the hard work to heal past wounds, but being a new parent involves hormones, stimulation (think loud noises and a messy house), and new worries that your nervous system hasn’t dealt with before.
Trauma Therapy May Be for You If:
Memories from your childhood are starting to surface and negatively affect how you show up as a parent.
You had a traumatic birth experience.
You’ve withdrawn and isolated from loved ones.
Anxiety and guilt are your baseline parenting emotions.
My goal for my clients is to help you work through what is holding you back from being the parent you want to be (and making sure your expectations are realistic!). We will explore how your past affects the way you view yourself in this new role, and explore tools to help you feel calm, grounded, and present with your family.
